Với Nguyễn Ngọc Tư, ngoài đóng góp của ông thần đất, còn có, của con Quỉ Hậu Chiến.
Chưa biết mèo nào cắn mỉu nào. Có lẽ đóng góp của Quỉ, nặng hơn nhiều, về "phẩm", sự thiệt hại kể như vô phương cứu chữa:
Đô rất độc, tẩm vào người nỗi chết!

Đó cũng là điều Llosa nhận ra, khi đọc Giáo đường của Faulkner. [Một miền đất thiên đường biến thành] một miền đất của cái ác,  những vùng, khu vực, của điêu tàn và ghê rợn, vượt quá mọi hy vọng, hết thuốc chữa:
Nothing is described, but from that unexpressed savagery a poisonous atmosphere seeps out and spreads to contaminate Memphis and other places in the novel, turning them into a land of evil, regions of ruin and horror, beyond all hope.

For many readers, "Sanctuary" doesn't seem to fit into Faulkner's canon. Although the prose is recognizably his, the tone and subject matter seem more appropriate to the genre of pulp fiction--closer to Hammett than to O'Connor. And, for the time it was published, it is shockingly gruesome and graphic. (Arnold Bennett said that it was a "terrible" book and "a great novel.") Once you figure out who everyone is and what's going on, however, it's an unlikely page-turner. Faulkner presents his tale not simply as a mystery but as a puzzle of characters who can barely figure out their own roles and who challenge the reader to sort out their stories
